The first assigned reading, was discussing how imperative it is to have a bibliography and notes during the process of writing an essay. A bibliography is a list of writings with time and place of publication. The point of it is to credit an author for any statement you used from their work and to avoid being accused of plagiarism. I find taking notes to be a very helpful tool in the process of writing an essay. The more notes you take makes the actual essay much easier because all you basically have to add is the transitional words and etc. I find index cards the best thing to use and ironically, the author advises you to use index cards.

The second reading was on how advertising affects people. Companies advertise through many different ways. For example, television, radio, and the internet tend to be the most popular techniques. Advertisement is a huge part of promoting a product, that’s the primary reason you see companies using popular athletes because they hope that they can attract the viewers enough so they won’t turn the channel because that is want many people do when commercials come on, including myself.

This reading, “The America I Love” was about how people struggle to feel part of the culture and tend to feel like an outcast sometimes. Honestly, I sometimes feel that, as a native of this country, I don’t belong places at a certain point because of people reaction to me so I can only imagine how visitors to the United States feel because a lot of people place stereotypes on other and I have to say I’m guilty of that sometimes. Being another race in America can sometimes make you have less pride about being yourself because of your religion. Most view America as the land of opportunity buy I’m quite sure many businesses deny individual’s positions in their company solely based on their race or ethnicity and that’s the reason I don’t like to hear that statement because I have been on both sides of that scale and it’s a very discouraging experience. For example, if there is a spot as a boss in a company and Japanese and white man is equivalent in their resumes and etc, sad to say but there is a good chance the white man will be selected based on his race. It’s unfortunate but it’s something that will be here forever.

The topic of my research paper is the causes of crime, mainly by teens. Therefore the question of my paper is, What is the causes for a individual to feel the need to commit a crime? I will be discussing the driving forces behind people committing crimes. The causes of the crimes will be followed up with concrete examples of that specific crime to bring it sort of to life and to also give the reader a better understanding if they quite don’t comprehend the causes themselves.

I chose this topic because where I’m from a lot of senseless crimes are committed and while watching the news and seeing the victim’s family suffer, I tend to wonder what was the reason for the criminal to do such a thing and put the next family through so much pain and hurt.

I really enjoyed the reading of “Why We Crave Horror Movies,” by Stephen King. I enjoy watching scary movies because it leaves you on the edge of your seat because your anxiety is building up to see what the next event that is going to occur is. I also know tons of people who hate scary movies for the same reason I love them. And as you can guess, their reasons for hating them are because they are impatient and don’t like having to wait for the next exciting event. King made said quote that I totally agreed with, “horror movies are like rollercoaster’s, there unpredictable”. That is so true because they are unpredictable but also you will find some who are scared to get on rollercoaster’s as well as those who love getting on them, that’s the same with scary movies. These two are so closely connected because your adrenaline begins to rush at such a rapid pace when you’re involved in one of the two. Based on my experiences, you will basically find kids around 9 and 10 years of age and elderly people that don’t enjoy watching scary movies and the age group in between will most likely be a fan of horror movies.

In high school, I was taught many writing strategies that were able to help me improve my essay. Outlining and free writing are two techniques that were taught to me in high school are now being taught to me in college. I feel doing an outline before the essay is a great approach to writing the best essay possible. It is extremely helpful because with a good outline, your essay is basically complete. The last thing you have to do is insert transitional sentences and etc. I like my essay to have a nice flow so I use this strategy as much as possible.

Free writing is the second technique I enjoy using. This involves a rule where you have to continuously write and don’t take your pen off the paper. I learned about this in high school but it was until college that I was taught to continue writing” I don’t know what to write” when nothing pertaining to the topic comes to your mind because eventually your mind will have something to write about the specific topic. This is a strategy I use a lot when the topic is difficult and my thought process is slower than normally.

Most people behavior towards writing and I would be interesting. I only enjoy writing papers on a subject of my decision. I think its imperative you make your writing interesting because I know as a reader myself that if the first two or so paragraphs are boring, it is hard for the reader to continue on. That’s the reason why I use the technique that was taught to me in high school. I read my own paper as if it’s someone else and criticize myself quite harshly. I tend to proofread my papers over and over again because I always feel you can make an improvement somewhere. When I write, I like to have the reader feel like their part of the story so I use great detail. Even though I really don’t enjoy reading, I think it helps a lot when you compare your work to a profession writer’s work. A lot can be said about a person through their writing itself because it’s very expressive. When I write about a topic that is assigned to me and doesn’t interest me, that is when I have the most problems because I tend to go off track and discuss something completely off topic.

My Ticket to the Disaster by Suzanne Berne is a very interesting story. It is about the site where the Twin Towers used to stand and how people have mixed feelings about the way people treat it. In the story, Berne describes her trip to the historic site in great detail. She explains how she went there and how you began to fall in love with how the area looks until you realize what had to happen for this site to exist, for example all the lives that were lost and all the families that will have to mourn their lost loved ones forever.

I feel the site should indeed be a place where tourists could visit. There are a couple reason why I think that. First, people who live outside of the United States doesn’t really know how much pain and torture the 9/11 attacks put our nation through so to have a location that shows the importance of those who passed away and celebrate their lives and show their not forgotten is imperative. Secondly, I think this site is also good for the families directly affected by the attacks. Although visits their will always be extremely emotional, I think families knowing they will always have a spot to go pay respects is also good.

During the summer, I was trying to get a job before leaving for college to save up some money. I began asking around trying to find out a good area to go job hunting. So one of my friends recommended that I go to a street in Manhattan named 45th street and Broadway Avenue. So one early morning I got up and went to 145th street and Broadway Avenue and there werent any jobs being offered. I was starting to frustrated so I called my friend and cursed him out because I thought he directed me to the wrong area.

But after going on a complete rant telling him how he had me in the middle of nowhere, I realized I had made the mistake. I assumed he was talking about 145th street because we refer to those streets using only the last two digits and refer to any double digit numbered streets as downtown so that is where the confusion came from. I learned from this mix up that when giving direction or recieving them, it is imperative to confirm the exact location specifically. Due to this, I’ve learned to pay more attention when someone gives me directions.

I enjoyed reading the story In the Kitchen by Henry Louis Gates Jr.. It was about a family from Piedmont, West Virginia who mother was very original with the thing she did. They used their kitchen for many different purposes, hence the title. As explained in the text, the family kitchen was used so the mother can do her hair, to take showers because there was no shower in the house, and to bring in a little income because the mother also did hair occasionally. Henry was amazed at how much work his mom was capable of doing with her hair or anothers hair with such minimized items.

I admired this family because this was a prime example of a situation in which a family used all the sources they had available to them and made the most out of it. This story taught me to be grateful for what I have and not take nothing for granted because there are some people out there that are not even fortunate enough to be presented with an opportunity to be successful. To this day, stories like this taught me to never joke on a person because of what they lack but to like a person for what they posess.
